The Warm Weather
The warm weather over the last few weeks has made a wonderful difference to the look of the park. The flowers
have been beautiful, starting with the Snowdrops, and then a wonderful display of Daffodils. At the moment the
Bluebells are coming into bloom, and the trees have beautiful fresh green leaves. There have been a lot of users
in the park, and it is good to see the cyclists and the joggers out enjoying themselves again. Unfortunately the
bridle path has really suffered from neglect over the last few years and needs to be sorted out before it is suitable
for use by the horses, so it remains closed at the moment.
We have a newly carved owl which has been kindly re-carved by Nigel, the tree surgeon. He is also repairing a
bench for us, and carving another tree stump in the park to celebrate the Guide Centenary.
There is also a new bench in the park, which has been kindly donated by a local family for use by a family
member who walks his dog in the park every day. It is right by one of the old oak trees on the top path, and is
providing a lovely view across the top of the park to the fields on the other side.
Jack has been busy these last few weeks repairing the picnic tables which had been vandalised, and we are now
ready for the picnics that hopefully will be part of the summer. We had a great picnic in the park last summer, with
people bringing food and drink to share, and playing a game or two of boules, which was a good day out for the
Friends of the Linear Park members. We hope to do the same again this summer.
We have a quiz sheet available at the moment; one hundred ‘stonking’ questions to keep the grey matter going.
This is available from any of the committee upon request [or phone me; number below], all monies going into our
pot for improvements. We are also holding a great classic rock night on Friday 21st May in the Village Club,
featuring local band Black Thursdays with support from their friends. Tickets are available by contacting the club,
the Harrow or myself on 767708. They are selling out quickly!
We also had a stall on Community Day with a mystery raffle, and thank everybody who supported us. Our next
project is to improve the upper path so that it is more user friendly for wheel chair and pram users. This will allow
more people to access this lovely outdoor area.
We are relaunching our web site, as we now have the facilities to put it together ourselves, and Jeff is busy putting
it together. It should be up and running properly in the next few weeks, so be ready to pay us a visit. More news on
this in the next article.
We have had a few donations over recent months, and thanks go out to Styles and to AMEC for their very kind
donations. This money will start off our new fundraising events, and help pay for the repairs to the bench that our
local vandals took an axe to. Unfortunately it was one of the carved benches, so needs some work doing to bring
it back to its old glory.
The ditching has made a big difference to the lower path, which is now a dry walking area. If you haven’t been
down to the park recently, why not take a walk? You might be pleasantly surprised.
