Winter on the Linear Park is always ....

Winter on the Linear Park is always a quiet time. During the snow the scenery is breath taking and the paths icy;
whilst at the moment the rains are making the middle area of the path more of a stream, reminding us what the
whole of the park pathway was like before the ditch was dug out.

We have lost one or two trees recently. Our problem is that the ‘soil’ in the park is the harsh grit which was put
down to run the railway on, and the trees find it difficult to root vertically. They send their roots out horizontally
which does not give them a lot of purchase, and as a result the rain dislodges the roots and then the wind brings
them down.

We have, at last, been given the idea of how much it would be to make some of the paths more disability friendly,
and are being told it will cost in the region of £50,000. This is a big blow to us, as you can imagine, as this is a lot
of money to raise, and we are contemplating whether we can go down this route or not.

Some of you might have seen us in Sainsbury’s before Christmas, bag packing and raising money for the park.
We thank you and Sainsburys for your generosity.

Andy, the ranger, and Chris, one of our volunteers continue to do their best to keep the park under control. This
week they have been sorting out overhanging branches and turning them into a mulch for the park.
